There are a multitude of D&D games online if one knows where to look.
There are specialized engines such as OpenRPG for play by chat as well as standard chatroom games. My preference is for play by post because chat games requite the same sort of scheduling as real life games. Far and away the best site I’ve found for that is Myth-Weavers.

There are a number of ways to play the RPG online, the main ones being by chat, play by email (which also covers forums and similar boards) and games run with tools like OpenRPG. I’m not sure where to find chat or OpenRPG games, but googling “pbem” will turn up thousands of places where you can play by email. Yahoo groups alone has hundreds.
Good luck!
