I think there should be an advertising campaign on behalf of good manners to improve mutual respect in public?

Rudeness to other people is a second class way of behaviour and people only get away with it because that fact is not brought home to them. So I think an advertising campaign to change attitudes would have a strong positive influence. I expect a lot of derision for this, but I have seen a rude workplace transformed into a pleasant place to work simply because it was no longer seen as acceptable to be verbally violent. What do others think?
Dr Weasel – I am not sure I am understanding your point – are you saying that it is difficult for anyone to agree on what is right and what is wrong, therefore one person assertion is another persons rudeness? If that is your point I would reply that ‘good manners’ would no doubt include respecting other peoples viewpoints without necasarilly agreeing with them, yet remaining civil. My question possibly sounds idealistic but if good manners are not taught in the home in all cases, then an ad campaign labelling people who get their pleasure putting others down as the fools they are then given that it is not a solution to the problem its a contribution.

You are preaching to the choir. I don’t know if its because of the way I was raised or all of the old movies I’ve grown up watching, I would just like to see people upgrade their manners and civility. I am tired of people not using simple social graces such as, “Please”, “Thank you”, “Yes please”, “No, thank you”, “God bless you”, “Excuse me”, “Do you mind if I ask”?, et. al. I would really rather not see men treating baseball caps as fashion items, wearing them inside a building, that is, but I think I could overlook that if some of these other things were taken out and dusted off. Why is it people don’t view it as rude to ask you how much you make? I was raised to believe that that was the height of rudeness, and yet it seems socially acceptable now. Where are we headed as a society? Not only do the knuckle draggers pick their noses, they do it in public, while talking to you and looking you dead in the eye.
Here then, is your challenge. Assemble if you can, a complete understanding of what it means to be Moral, complete with your assessment of Ethics, and find world agreement on your findings.
It is a lot harder than it looks.
