What can we do about false campaign ads/slogans ? ?

I’m an independent, I’ve voted since the 1976 election. A Republican has been in office the majority of the years since. Every election the Republicans say don’t vote Democrat because they will raise your taxes. I remember George H. W. Bush’s famous campaign slogan, read my lips ” no more new taxes.” Our taxes have been going up and we’ve gotten news ones ever since.
That’s just one example, there are more and from the other side also.
How can we hold politicians accountable for giving campaign ads/slogans, just to get votes, they don’t keep when elected ?

ignore them
Ignore them…they wouldn’t use them if the didn’t work, but there are a lot of Americans that eat that stuff up
You also need to realize that the President does not run this country like a dictator…there are two other branches that make decisions as well.
Obama and McCain both say they are going to lower taxes…neither of them can given the current economic crisis and Obama never intended to in the first place.
Ignore them or be so disgusted, vote against them. Educated voters do their own research anyway, the real problem is the uninformed voters who buy all the crap that is spewed in both directions.
What can you do? Stop listening to Obama.
Go back to the 2006 election see what the Liberals promised, Nancy had a plan to lower Gas prices,More Jobs, What happened.
Call and email the Dem politicians and campaigners and ask them to stop lying and smearing. This is not Nicaragua nor Venezuela.
vote for obama or go to war
Practice media literacy. Before you automatically believe any claim by a politician, do research. There are independent news sites that seem more unbiased. Of course, you need to read about things from different sources, so you can figure out what about the claim is true, and what holds no ground.
We can’t really hold them accountable… but you can be smart enough not to fall for it.
It is every persons responsibility to educate themselves with an outside news source, meaning news about the candidates that comes from another source and not their party’s propaganda.
I mostly rely on the French and German news to tell me whats going on in the world, and the objective news sources like DemocracyNow.org to give me the scoop on whats happening in this country.
Deconstruct them.
Do your research.
Do your research past the ads.
bush sr is the only republican president to raise taxes in the last 30 years but even he didn’t raise them as high as clinton (a democrat) did. Bush jr has lowered taxes for the working class sense hes been in office.
Not listen to them.
It’s not the politicians. It’s dumb voters. And basically, it’s not illegal to lie at a campaign stop.
Seems most people want the government to always step in. Well, that costs money. So every time someone says “they should do something about….” They don’t seem to understand that it costs money.
When’s the last time you heard anyone cut anything dramatically? I’m talking billion dollar programs, to justify any new program…
my husband’s political platform is bigger beers, bigger busted women, and wider sidewalks. as an answer to your question. We think all politicians should be held accountable for the promises that are made and when something goes wrong arrested and brought up on charges benefit by fraud. Fraud is against the law.
The best way is through education. Too often we fail to teach our younger voters the difference between what is true and what is being used to smear the other candidate. Of course, why would the Democrats and Republicans do that with a group of impressionable people. These people then get older and cannot change the err of their way.
Senationalism over substance unfortunately wins every time. Until we as a society get away from that and educate ourselves, we are doomed every four years to repeat the same mistakes.
Be discerning. Then vote.
Don’t believe everything you read and hear without checking the source and find many sources. What is based on fact not fiction.Whoever becomes president will have his hands full. It also starts with the Senate and Congress to study enact and pass what the president wants done. They too have to be accountable. The beauty of our government is we can vote them out of office if they deceive us or don’t do their jobs. Many “lazy” voters like the **** ads it works them up.Hopefully the majority of sensible voters filter it all out.
We need to pass a new law in the Congress of the United States of America that says that candidates who seek to be elected to be President, Vice President, Senator, or Congressman, will be subject to recall by the voters for that elected office, if it can be clearly determined by a reasonable person, that they blatantly violated a promise made to the votes during their election campaign, without any imperative need or reasonable cause to do so.
