How much money can I make through internet advertising?

I have a new web service I want to start, and I am trying to decide what is the best revenue model – making it free with ads, or charging fees for service levels. I don’t know what I can reasonably expect to make with internet ads, nor who is the best ad provider to work with. And does it matter what kind of ads, like banners or words or pop-ups?
