Is it weird to submit a picture when emailing a resume?

Posted Friday, October 1, 2010 by admin

I’m applying for any open positions at all of the news stations in my city. I would like to be in front of the cameras but I am willing to take any kind of opening position to start with such as cameraman, etc. So I was thinking of submitting a picture with my resume since I may be on camera someday and they might see my potential. Or is that weird?

I work in HR and my first response was YES, but then I read your question. I would since part of your “package” is how you look. In this case, I think they would expect to have your picture.

    Best of luck.

I’m actually in newscasting. So, I know the answer to this question.

Yes, submit your photo. I have worked in the acting, modelling, and newscasting fields and in these areas, you MUST submit your photo.

In ANY OTHER FIELD, under no circumstances should you submit your photo, because it just opens you up to possible discrimination.

If you do make sure it is a nice professional looking picture. Don’t be taking it with your blackberry while holding up a peace sign with your lips pouting out or some stupid thing like that.

That’s actually even required for a lot of television stations, so it’s absolutely not weird. I would highly suggest it, especially after having seen your picture–it certainly would not hurt your chances! :)
